To qualify for a grant, the organization must be recognized as tax exempt under section 501(c)3 of the Internal Revenue Code.

Application Process
Grant decisions are made twice per year. Each cycle has 2 stages:

Stage 1: Application (Generally due the 1st week in July or January): Organizations will submit a full proposal, budget, and additional supporting materials. Applicants should note whether they require more than one year of funding (Note: the Board tends to grant one year of funding and ask the agency to submit a progress report and proposal for subsequent years).

During the March/September Board meetings, the Board evaluates each application, assesses whether the program is aligned with SMSF’s focus areas, and evaluates the merits of the proposal. Stage 1 ascertains whether the Board wishes to consider an organization’s proposal based on the applicant’s ability to deliver the proposed programs/services and the potential impact of the project.

Stage 2: Follow-up Information (generally due within 1 month): Applicants submit answers to Board members’ follow-up questions and provide any additional materials requested. Applicants might also be invited to make a brief presentation to the Board at the beginning of the December/June Board meetings.

Award Process

If approved, organizations will be asked to sign a Grant Agreement, which specifies all the conditions associated with the grant. The agreement will also specify the format and the due dates for a Final Report following the conclusion of the grant term. In the event that a grant is approved for more than one year, a Progress Report will be required within 9 months (see Report Form).
